Coconut oil pulling is a natural remedy that has its origin in ancient ayurvedic medicine. Although coconut oil pulling has been used for thousands of years as a folk remedy in India, it is only recently that the therapy gained mainstream attention mainly because of its multiple benefits. Oil pulling coconut oil therapy uses natural substances to detoxify the body by absorbing chemicals and toxins through blood vessels in the tongue and mouth. Step 1

Alternatively, you can do it before lunch provided you have not eaten for at least 4 hours.

Step 2

After about 20 minutes, the oil turns watery and milky white and this is a sign that you are pulling chemicals and toxins out of your body. Spit out the coconut oil and gargle your mouth with warm salt water. The process should not be stressful at all. Coconut oil swishing in mouth may feel a little foreign.  

At first it might be quite difficult to do the 20 minutes straight. Therefore, you can start out in 5 minutes intervals. If your muscles get sore you are swishing the oil too vigorously! If you are a multi-tasker like myself, you can even do other things such as washing the dishes, showering or watching the news while gently swishing the oil in your mouth!  However, if you feel the urge to swallow the oil –  spit it out, take a deep breath and start again. After a few goes, it will become second nature.

  • Do not swallow the coconut oil because it contains the toxins and chemicals you are pulling from the body.
  • The timing is key. This should be long enough to break through bacteria and plaque but not long enough for the body to start reabsorbing the bacteria and toxins.
